This mode makes it easy to troubleshoot problems because it does not load things that can cause Windows to crash. When you boot into Safe Mode in Windows 10, the operating system loads a minimal user interface, with only the essential services and drivers needed for it to function.
How to start Windows 10 in Safe Mode (video tutorial) Press the 4 or the F4 key on your keyboard to start Safe Mode.
After Windows 10 restarts one more time, you can choose which boot options you want to be enabled. Windows 10 says that you can restart your device to change advanced boot options, including enabling Safe Mode. Finally, click or tap the Startup Settings option. On the Advanced options screen, choose Startup Settings. On the Troubleshoot screen, go to Advanced options. Windows 10 restarts and asks you to select an option. With this key still pressed, click or tap the Power button and, in the menu that opens, click Restart. On the Windows 10 sign-in screen, press and hold the SHIFT key on the keyboard. If asked if you want to continue running in Safe Mode, click Yes. If you see a screen asking you to select your operating system, just press Enter on your keyboard.Īfter you press enter, you should see a lot of scrolling white text, this is normal. Note: Dial-Up Networking may not work, even in Safe Mode with Networking. If you need to access the internet, select Safe Mode with Networking by using the arrow keys and press Enter. If you see the Windows loading screen, you need to restart and begin pressing F8 earlier. Proceed to step 4.Īs soon as your computer turns on and you see the splash screen (example pictured below), begin tapping the F8 key. Windows 10: Hold shift then restart your computer. Windows 8: Restart your computer and tap F8 every half second or so. Once you have corrected the problem, then you can reboot and Windows will load normally. The purpose of Safe Mode is to allow you to troubleshoot Windows and try to determine what is causing it not to function properly. Safe Mode is a special way for Windows to load when there is a system-critical problem that interferes with the normal operation of Windows.
